The concept behind Leonardo Mechanograph®

The Leonardo Mechanography measurement concept differs from the typical application of force plates to enable fast, highly reliable measurement results with high significance.

Concept

The objective of Leonardo Mechanography is the fast and easy-to-use quantification of human movement and power on the basis of physical quantities. The concept is based on measuring dynamic ground reaction forces by using special force plates during everyday movements, as these are easy to instruct over a wide age range (from infants to old age) and at the same time very reproducible. In order to be able to determine the actual performance of the body, movements are used that push the body to its limits.

Advantages

This concept offers significant advantages in application: On the one hand, it enables the simple quantification of actual peak forces, peak powers and left/right differences in physiological (natural) movement sequences. On the other hand, it offers a measurement method that is extremely efficient to use in everyday life, as the measurement can be carried out quickly (approx. 3 minutes for a set of 4 tests) and easily and no complex additional instrumentation is required.
This ease of use not only allows for an extremely wide range of applications (from infants to the elderly) but also, for example, to perform measurements without any supervision at all. The specially developed Leonardo GRFP Kiosk system allows the end customer to carry out regular self-administered measurements.

Effective use

This ease of use not only allows for an extremely wide range of applications (from infants to the elderly) but also, for example, to perform measurements without any supervision at all. The specially developed Leonardo GRFP Kiosk system allows the end customer to carry out regular self-administered measurements.
After a short briefing, the video-supported user guidance enables him to obtain a comprehensive overview of his current fitness status as well as his individual development in only 3 minutes per measurement. Based on this data, training goals can then be adjusted, for example.

Extensive reference data

The high reproducibility combined with child’s play operation enables reference data for numerous types of measurement and analysis parameters over a wide age range from 3 to 99 years. Examples of included reference data are:

  • Individual performance (peak anaerobic power, Esslinger Fitness Index, EFI: W/kg body weight by gender and age group from 3-99 years).
  • Individual determination of maximum strength per leg (reference data from 3-99 years)
  • Individual determination of performance on the Chair Rising Test (CRT) (reference data from 3-20 years)
  • Maximum grip force (MIGF) (reference data from 3-99 years)
  • Stair Climb Up & Down (reference data from 3-20 years)

Measurement and analysis software - Leonardo Mechanography

Leonardo Mechanography Software

Leonardo Mechanography is the software to perform measurements as well as to analyse the results in detail. The software was developed especially for Leonardo Mechanograph® systems and is continuously improved with updates on a regular basis.

Leonardo Mechanography Software is available in the following variants:

  • Basic Edition (BAS)
    The basic software
  • Research Edition (RES)
Software with extended functionality as for example many additional measurement and analysis types as well as additional software modules like the statistics module.
  • Kiosk Edition (Kiosk)
Special variant with simplified user interface optimized for touch-screen operation, allowing the end-user to conduct measurement and assessment by himself.

Measurement and analysis method

The methodology of the Leonardo Mechanography analysis algorithms.

Objective measurement variables

Human movements can be objectively quantified on the basis of physics: The decisive factors for performance are force, speed and time. Leonardo Mechanography dynamically determines ground reaction forces and then calculates center of gravity related physical quantities such as acceleration, speed, energy, power, jump height and stiffness or flexibility.

Measurement method

The temporal and spatial course of the ground reaction forces are measured. By using a split ground reaction force measuring plate, asymmetries of the musculo-skeletal system can be quantified directly in the physiological movement process in both unilateral and symmetrical movements.
Since the forces are recorded spatially resolved, stabilometric analyses can also be carried out, for example as part of balance tests.

Leonardo Mechanography Software

scientifically proven

The measurement method of Leonardo Mechanography has been used in more than 150 scientific publications to characterize different groups of subjects and patient collectives as well as to document intervention effects. Therefore, the system also provides reference data for numerous measurements over a very wide age range.

Typical applications are:

  • Fitness (e.g. Leonardo Mechanograph Kiosk)
  • Power diagnostics
  • Muscle function diagnostics
  • Geriatrics: fall risk, sarcopenia, dynapenia
  • Paediatrics: Muscle function, power, strength
  • Physiotherapy: Documentation of the treatment success
  • Sport: performance diagnostics, training control
